Hi Everyone, I want to migrate all my photos from my Mac to my Synology DS, and I have the following kit: • DS-214-play • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) running El Capitain I'm unsure what the best set-up is. I like Photos for Mac and was wondering if it's possible to migrate the Photos library over to my Synology/ DS, if this possible? If not, what other solutions are there? I want ease of use and a solid, consistent way to store all my photos going forwards. I'm not very sophisticated with techy terms and so simple explanations when possible are welcome! I have a similar problem that started when I went on vacation. I didn't want all my photos on my macbook hd, so I put them on an external drive. Then while I was on vacation I downloaded new photos. So now all the pre-vacation photos are there as thumbnails but not actual photos--those get me the big exclamation point when I try to access them. So you want to move your photo library off of your laptop completely, right? Meaning when you have your laptop and you aren't at home/near your Synology, you won't have your photos with you? If so, that's easy to do. On your Mac mount the Synology (from your desktop, open a desktop window, and on the left sidebar you should see the name of your Synology somewhere. Click it, wait for it to load). Then, navigate to your Photos library where you should have your Photos Library stored. Then drag it and drop it in the Synology like you would when moving any other file from one folder to another. This will likely copy your library, and not delete the original - which is good, for now. Next step is that you hold the Alt button while clicking on the Photos application in your dock. If you did it right, it will prompt you to find a new location for your main photo library. Guide it to the one that you just put on your Synology, and then Photos should open. If I remember, the last step is to go to Preferences within Photos, and you have to make the Synology Photos Library your main or primary library. Then you should be good to go, and can probably delete the Photos Library which is still on your computer. I hope that you're 'sophisticated' enough to do the above properly, as I don't want to be responsible for you deleting all your photos accidentally or whatever. If you aren't confident with it, don't try it - go on YouTube and find some videos of moving an iPhoto library. I don't think the Synology can be formatted for Mac, at least not the way you're talking about. The Synology is a stand-alone Linux computer - when the Mac talks to it, it isn't just looking at a hard drive - it's communicating with the Linux. You want the drive in a format the Linux can read, then when the Mac goes to look at the library, it asks the Linux computer to act as a middle man of sorts. Mac driver for sound input usb. So no, don't worry about the format of the disk so long as the Synology is running normally and you didn't do anything to alter it's default settings with regards to the disk format. But, as mentioned, if you follow the steps above you will have a COPY of your library on the Synology. Test it out, make sure your computer works normally, maybe even move the ORIGINAL Photos Library to another folder on your laptop, and test to see that Photos still functions normally (with its library located on the Synology). Assuming you followed the steps above and it all works, and then you can move around the original library on your computer and have Photos continue to work, then you've done it right and it's (relatively) safe to delete the original library off of your laptop. Well, I can't say I have any personal experience with this so proceed at your own risk, but my first thought would be to use symlinks to make it so the photo files themselves are visible outside of the photos.app special package file. So the hurdle you have to overcome is that the photos.app library file is a file inside of which are the photos, etc. On your Mac, if you find your photos.app library and right click on it, the first or second option is Show Package Contents. When you click that, it jumps you inside the library (as if it was a normal folder), inside of which you will see a few folders such as Modified photos and Original photos. Your SO's PC can't read the photos.app library, but it can read the files within it. So personally I would try to use Terminal and a 'ln -s' command to symbolically copy the Originals and/or Modified photo folders to the outside of the Photos.app library. The end result would be you would have your photos.app library file, next to which you would have a Symlink folder to your Modified and/or Originals. Your SO's PC could read that symlink folder and the pictures inside and for all intents and purposes ignore the photos.app file. That may not make much sense to you though, so I apologize if so.
